Empty Jars: When Heaven Meets our “Little”

2 Kings 4:2–6 (NIV): Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.” Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbours for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.” She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.

Luke 9:23 (NIV): Then He said to them all: “Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.”

Act:

Let us be determined this week to:

1️⃣ See what’s in our hands before we panic about what’s missing. Miracles are never born in the space of scarcity, but in the faith to offer what remains. The widow saw nothing but debt, loss, and fear. Yet God saw oil. We may think we have “not enough”… but God sees seed. Remember: Our offering becomes His overflow. What we call small, God calls the beginning of a miracle.

2️⃣ Empty our “inner jar” so Heaven can fill it. Elisha didn’t ask for full jars, he asked for empty ones. God is still doing the same. He fills the humble, the surrendered, the yielded. He resists the proud, but pours His Spirit on the empty. So let us ask ourselves: What is taking up space in my jar? Fear? Pride? Control? Offense? Anxiety? Remember: God cannot fill what is already crowded. Our emptiness is sacred ground—the place where God pours oil.

3️⃣ Obey the instruction even when we don’t understand the miracle.“Go. Borrow jars.” “Don’t gather just a few.” (2 Kings 4:3) The widow obeyed without knowing how the story would end. Our greatest breakthroughs are often hidden behind simple obedience.

4️⃣ Keep pouring, even when the jar feels too small and the need too big. Scripture says, “She kept pouring.” (2 Kings 4:5) Faith perseveres. Faith keeps pouring when circumstances say “stop.” Faith continues long after logic gives up. So let us remember: As long as there is an empty jar, God keeps the oil flowing.

5️⃣ Believe that God does miraculous things with surrendered smallness. David had a sling. The boy had lunch. The widow had oil. The disciples had mustard-seed faith. We may feel insignificant, but Heaven sees a vessel ready for overflow. Because, little in our hands becomes limitless in God’s hands.

Pray:

Father, today we bring You our empty jars—our weaknesses, our limits, our fears, our smallness. We lay down pride, striving, and self-reliance.

Empty us, Lord, until none of “us” remains and only Your Spirit fills the vessel. Pour into us Your love, Your peace, Your patience, Your goodness, Your power.

Lord, we offer You our little—our “except,” our “only,” our “small jar of oil.” Multiply it. Use it. Breathe on it. Turn emptiness into overflow and surrender into supernatural supply. Make our lives jars of clay carrying the treasure of Your presence.

We trust You. We obey You. We make room for You. Fill us to overflow, Father.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

✨ Remember: God will always fill the space we make for Him. So let us empty our jars… and watch the oil flow.
