Rooted in God’s Rest!
Read:
Genesis 2:2–3 (NLT): “On the seventh day God had finished His work of creation, so He rested from all His work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy.”
Exodus 20:8–11 (NLT): “Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God… For in six days the Lord made the Heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day He rested. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.”
Act:
Let us be determined this week to:
Recognise that God’s provision goes beyond meeting our physical needs. While we often see God as our provider of food, shelter and sustenance, His provision also includes the gift of rest. By commanding us to rest, God invites us to trust in His sufficiency and reminds us that our worth isn’t found in endless toil, but in relying on His care.
Remember that rest is part of God’s divine design. Just as He created day and night, seasons, and work, He also created rest. By pausing, as God did on the seventh day, we trust in His sovereignty and remember that our true worth comes from our relationship with Him, not our accomplishments. So, let us honour God by embracing His rhythms for balance, restoration and renewal.
Understand that resting is an act of faith. In a fast-paced world where busyness defines worth, rest declares that God’s provision is enough and affirms that our security comes from Him, not our own efforts. The Sabbath invites us to worship, reflect on God’s blessings, and delight in His creation. Living our lives rooted in God’s rest allows us to trust and know that in Him, we have all we need.
Pray:
Lord, You know we live in a world driven by busyness and achievements, where we constantly need to keep going. We often believe that rest is unproductive and a complete waste of time. But, Lord, thank You for reminding us that rest is part of Your natural rhythms. Today, we declare that You are enough, You are more than enough, and we wholeheartedly trust in Your provision. Give us the courage to step back, be still, trust in You, and rest in Your presence. Forgive us for the times we rush past You. Lord, we long for a deeper relationship with You, for Your peace to refresh our souls and calm our hearts. We desire to soar like eagles and run without growing weary, knowing this can only happen when we live from a place of rest.
Creator God, I am in awe of Your manifold works, Your glorious designs, Your infinite wisdom, and the beauty of Your holiness. Thank You for creating rhythms of life and seasons of rest, modelling them for us during creation, and lovingly establishing them in our spiritual lives through Your Word. Please help us implement them better in our daily lives and deliver us from restlessness, workaholism, and hurry-sickness. Jesus, as I follow You in the 21st century, help me align my schedule with Your eternal values of love, patience, kindness, and self-discipline to bring You glory. Teach me to number my days so that I may gain a heart of wisdom, and lead me beside still and quiet waters, refreshing and restoring my soul so that joy, peace and hope can take root and grow there again. Amen.
