The apple of God’s eye…

Read:

Psalm 17:8 (NIV): “Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings”.

Act:

In verse 7 of Psalm 17, David asks God to show him the wonder of His marvellous and amazing love by caring for and protecting him as the “apple of God’s eye”. The “apple of the eye” is the opening in the centre of our eyes, better known as the pupil, through which light passes to our retina. It’s the tiny, tender, most precious part of our eye. It’s also carefully guarded by the eyebrow, eyelid, eyelashes and surrounding bones.

How amazing to think that God, the Creator of the universe, so greatly loves and treasures us, that He calls us the “apple of His eye”. This implies that He longs to lavish us with His tender loving-kindness and care – inviting us into an intimate relationship to experience the wonder of His LOVE.

Let us be determined this week to:
Embrace the love, value and worth God has poured out upon us as His children. Our lives carry immense value to our Creator God. Jesus reminds us of the wonder of our Heavenly Father’s deep, never-ending, unfailing affection for us in Matthew 6:26 (AMP): “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” As children of God, we are co-heirs in His Kingdom. Do we really understand the depth, breath and greatness of being called the “apple of God’s eye?” If we do, how could that change our perspective of who He is, who we are in Him, and how we can relate to others?
Pursue a loving, intimate relationship with our Father God above all else. Just as a bird would shield and guard her offspring under the warmth and protection of her feathers; the wings of God provide us with SAFETY against the storms of life (Psalm 57:1; Zechariah 2:8); STILLNESS and a place of REFRESHING in the midst of our crazy-busy lives (Psalm 36:7-8; 61:4; 91:1); HELP and GUIDANCE that lead to JOY and HAPPINESS (Psalm 57:1; 63:7); COMFORT and CARE in our hour of need (Deuteronomy 32:10); HOPE when life seems bleak or difficult (Psalm 91:4); and above all – LOVE in times when we experience opposition, rejection or loneliness (Psalm 36:7). Let’s make spending time in the presence of our Lord – hiding under His wings – our highest pursuit. Nothing matches the WONDER of His amazing, unfailing, never-ending LOVE!

So, let us rejoice and soak in the glory of knowing that we are the “apple of His eye”, that He loves us and adores us in and through every season of life.

Pray:

Father God, thank You for Your wondrous, marvellous and amazing loving-kindness. We trust that we have Your affectionate care and protection over us, as we are Your valuable and precious children – the “apple of Your eye”. Please protect us from harm and evil. Hide us in the shelter of Your embrace, under Your outstretched wings.
Amen.
