The greatest commandment…
Read:
Matthew 22:37-39 (AMP): “And Jesus replied to him, YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it, YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR AS YOURSELF [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for others]”.
Act:
Let us be determined this week to:
Love God above all else. We can only understand what it means to love God with all of our passion, with all of our energy, and with all that we think and do, when we experience His unconditional, unfailing, never-ending love towards us. God so loved us that He gave His only Son to redeem and draw us into a right relationship with Him (John 3:16). We became children of God through the immense sacrifice of our Lord Jesus – the author and perfecter of love (John 1:12; Romans 5:8). We gained eternal life and hope (1 Peter 1:3-9)! To love God is to put Him first in every aspect of our lives. Let’s make that our highest pursuit!
Let our love towards other point them to Jesus. Jesus commanded us to love our friends and family in the same way we love ourselves. Based on the extraordinary love we receive from our Heavenly Father, we can extend pure love and kindness toward others (1 John 4:11). By caring for and loving on others, we fulfil the greatest commandment and showcase our love for God. This starts to happen when we are filled with God’s love and then, in return, reflect that love back to Him and to others! The breadth and depth of our love toward others reveal much about our love for God. God is love (1 John 4:7-8). The good news of the gospel is all about LOVE! Let’s become carriers of love everywhere we go (1 Corinthians 16:14).
Can I challenge us today? Let’s take the next 7 days to commit to doing something kind for at least one person daily; something that will extend Jesus’ love to them. This can be as simple as asking the person behind the counter how their day has been so far, or giving a little extra when tipping your waiter, or sending a text letting someone know that you are thinking of them and that they are not alone…
Pray:
Father God, we love You with all our passion, prayer and intelligence. Thank You for showering us with Your unconditional, never-ending love and grace. Help us to extend that same type of love, mercy and kindness toward others. Jesus, in Your most holy and mighty name we pray.
Amen.
